Refrigeration Oil Is NOT Ordinary Lubricant: 4 Core Functions You Must Know

Many people assume that refrigeration oil is simply "lubricant for the compressor" and that any oil will do. That is the biggest misconception about refrigeration systems. Refrigeration oil and ordinary lubricant are like a scalpel and a kitchen knife — both are blades, but their jobs could not be more different.
Refrigeration oil is a dedicated lubricant for refrigeration compressors. It operates under extreme conditions: high temperature, high pressure, highly soluble refrigerant and traces of moisture. Its mission goes far beyond simple lubrication. Here are its four core functions:
  1. Lubrication — Building an Oil Film for High-Speed Friction Pairs
Inside the compressor, piston rings and cylinder walls, crankshafts and bearings, vanes and rotors form numerous high-speed friction pairs. Refrigeration oil creates a thin oil film between them, replacing direct metal-to-metal contact with film-supported pressure. This:
• Lowers the friction coefficient and reduces mechanical wear;
• Carries away frictional heat and prevents local overheating;
• Absorbs shock loads and extends compressor life.
Once the oil film breaks down — due to insufficient viscosity, low oil level, or contamination — metal surfaces grind directly against each other, and the compressor can suffer cylinder scoring or seizure within hours.
2. Sealing — Blocking Gas Leakage Between High- and Low-Pressure Chambers
During compression, tiny gaps exist between piston rings and cylinder walls, or between mating screw rotors. High-pressure refrigerant tends to leak back to the low-pressure side through these gaps, reducing displacement and efficiency.
Refrigeration oil fills these clearances and forms a liquid film seal, locking the high-pressure refrigerant inside. With the wrong oil or insufficient oil charge, internal leakage increases — typical symptoms are slower cooling, higher current draw and elevated discharge temperature.
3. Cooling — Carrying Compressed Heat Away
Refrigerant temperature rises sharply during compression. If this heat is not removed in time, it accelerates oil oxidation, ages seals, and can trigger overheat protection or shutdown.
As the oil circulates, it absorbs frictional and compression heat and dissipates it through the oil cooler or the refrigerant loop. Insufficient oil circulation or over-viscous oil (poor flow) will cause compressor temperature to run out of control — an indirect cause of many "burnt oil" and "burnt motor" failures.
4. Oil Return — Bringing Oil Back Home
Refrigeration oil circulates through the system together with the refrigerant, and part of it tends to be trapped in the evaporator, accumulator and pipe bends. If the oil cannot return to the compressor, the compressor runs dry and wears out.
One key function of refrigeration oil is to maintain good miscibility with the refrigerant, so the oil can "hitch a ride" back to the compressor. This is exactly why refrigerant–oil matching matters so much: mineral oil pairs with R22, while POE pairs with R134a/R410A, to ensure proper miscibility and oil return.
